The Pauline privilege and the condemnation of divorce

Natural marriage is intrinsically indissoluble under natural law, but Pauline privilege implies that there are exceptional situations when natural marriage can be extrinsically dissolved by divinely delegated authority. This is a dispensation provided by supernatural law, when necessary for supernatural objectives. See the discussion linked, esp. p. 91:

The literal sense of the Gospel teaching is not contradicted by Pauline privilege, because the convert is still not permitted to send away his non-Christian spouse. In fact, he is obligated to remain married to her as long as she is willing to remain and keep her obligations with respect to the faith.

If a Pauline dispensation is granted, the common opinion is that the original marriage is not dissolved until the Christian party enters a new marriage.
